Last evening on our way to church down Hwy 414 in Greer, SC, we were driving through beautiful shimmering snow flakes. It was like a pillow fight with huge goose down feathers were falling from Heaven. Since my husband was driving, I, of course, was on the edge of my seat leaning forward watching the road. I saw how quickly it was covering the road and the ground. I turned my gaze to the pasture filled with weeds and piles of trash by the barn, along with old vehicles and rusty farm equipment that were being covered and even hidden giving the illusion of perfection. Suddenly we slid slightly off the road bringing my attention back to the dangers we may face in this magnificent snow storm. But my thoughts were on all that was hidden under the cover of a soft new layer of glistening wintry snow.
Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole;
I want Thee forever to live in my soul;
Break down every idol, cast out every foe--
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Refrain:
Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Lord Jesus, let nothing unholy remain,
Apply Thine own blood and extract every stain;
To get this blest cleansing, I all things forego--
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies,
And help me to make a complete sacrifice;
I give up myself, and whatever I know--
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat,
I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet,
By faith for my cleansing, I see thy blood flow--
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
The snow storm brought to my mind words of the above hymn, "Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole; I want Thee forever to live in my soul..." Yes, one day I will be perfectly whole, but not on this side of eternity will I reach perfection. I have tried being perfect and it just does not happen because I am still human. Not only can I stumble; I can fall. The temptations of sin is ever before me. Under all the "whiter than snow" is nothing but a sinner saved by God's amazing grace. "Perfection" to believers, never means "sinlessness." The sinful tendency of this life and this body are still in me.
I can only stay close to the Lord and read His Word for strength to overcome. Victory over sin is exclusively the work of God in Christ, the continual control of the life by the Holy Spirit. Looking back through my mind at the beautiful, crisp, white, shining covering that transformed the landscape of the scrubby old pasture and barn; I am reminded of being cleansed by the Blood of the One who washes me "whiter than snow." Christ and Christ alone transformed my life.

- Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:12-14)
